An athletic fence takes a hit from a ball and keeps the field, court, or yard enclosed. Within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256, we build backstops, court fencing, and ball-stop netting for schools, parks, clubs, and homes. Athletic fencing is available for homes and businesses. Free estimates mean we look at the field or court and check the town rules before anyone specs a height.

Ballfields

Backstops. The fence behind home plate that stops foul balls before they reach the spectators. It is a tall chain link panel on a frame, built to take the hit of a baseball or softball at speed.

Outfield and sideline fence. The lower chain link that marks the playing field and keeps balls from rolling into another field or a parking lot. It is set at a height a player can see over.

Dugout enclosures. The fence around the dugout that keeps the bench enclosed and the bats in one place. A short chain link panel with a gate does the job.

Tennis and Pickleball Courts

A court fence is tall coated chain link around the court that keeps balls in and defines the playing area. The height is what stops a tennis ball from leaving the court, and the vinyl coating on the chain link keeps the fence from marking the balls that hit it. A windscreen on the fabric cuts the cross-breeze that throws off play and gives the court a finished backdrop.

The gates have to be sized for maintenance equipment, not just foot traffic. A court gate too narrow for a roller or a leaf blower is a gate that has to come off when the court is maintained. Plan the gate width for what actually uses the opening.

Netting

Ball-stop netting is the lighter material behind goals and along property lines that catches balls before they leave the field. It is not a fence in the structural sense; it is a net on poles at the height the play calls for. Behind a soccer goal it keeps a stray shot out of a parking lot, and along a property line it keeps balls out of a neighbor's yard.

Netting is chosen where a solid fence would block the view or the play and a barrier is still needed. It is lighter, cheaper, and less visible than fence fabric, and it does the one job it is put up to do.

A Court at Home

In Indianapolis the zoning ordinance lets a residential game court fence go up to 10 feet (Table 744-204-1). That is taller than a standard backyard fence, which is capped at 6 feet in a side or rear yard, and it reflects the fact that a sport court needs a taller barrier than a yard does.

Other towns differ, so ask before building. Carmel and Noblesville require a fence permit; Westfield and Plainfield do not. If you are in an HOA, its rules apply on top of the town's. See the fence permit guide for the town-by-town list before you plan a court fence.

Schools, Parks and Clubs

For a facility, a few things make the scope easier: a site plan, the field or court dimensions, and the access points where equipment and people enter. A backstop and a court fence are not the same job, and the dimensions of the field or court set the footage and the gate locations.

Athletic Fence Questions

What fencing does a ballfield need?

A backstop behind home plate, outfield and sideline fence along the playing field, and dugout enclosures. Coated chain link is the usual material, built to take a hit from a ball and stand up to weather.

What fence suits a tennis or pickleball court?

Tall coated chain link around the court with a windscreen on the fabric and gates sized for maintenance equipment. The height keeps balls in and the windscreen cuts the cross-breeze that throws off play.

How tall can a home game court fence be in Indianapolis?

The Indianapolis zoning ordinance lets a residential game court fence go up to 10 feet (Table 744-204-1). Other towns differ, so ask before building. HOAs often have their own rule on top of the town's.

What about ball-stop netting?

Ball-stop netting behind goals and along property lines catches balls before they leave the field or court. It is a lighter material than fence fabric and is set on poles at the height the play calls for.

Do homes and businesses get the same athletic fence?

Yes. The same company fences home game courts, school and park fields, and commercial facilities. See the commercial chain link and custom gates pages for the material and the gate types.
