An outdoor railing is a small job that gets used every day and gets noticed first. Within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256, we build exterior railings for porches, decks, steps, and ramps at homes and businesses. This page is about outdoor railings only. Outdoor railings are available for homes and businesses. Free estimates mean we look at the steps or the deck before anyone commits to a material or a height.

Porch and Step Railings

A handrail on front steps is one of the most asked-for small jobs, especially for older homeowners. A step that was easy at forty becomes a hazard at seventy, and a railing on the wall or a post rail on the edge turns the steps back into something that can be used with confidence.

A porch railing marks the edge of a raised porch and gives a hand hold at the door. The height and the grip size are set by the building code, and a railing that meets the code is the one the building department will pass. A railing that does not is the one that has to come down and go back up.

Deck Railings

A deck railing is a guard railing around a raised deck that keeps the edge safe and defines the space. It can be matched to the house, to the fence, or to both, so a deck that sits beside an aluminum fence gets a railing in the same style and finish. The posts and the infill carry the wind and the lean load, so the material and the post setting matter as much as the look.

A deck that is more than thirty inches off the ground needs a guard rail under the building code, and the rail has to resist a horizontal load. A railing built light for looks alone will not pass that test. Build the rail to the code and the deck is usable and safe.

Ramps and Commercial Entries

A ramp or an exterior stair at a business is held to the accessibility and building codes, which set the heights and the grip sizes and are enforced by the building department. The building department has the final word on what applies to the entry. We do not state a dimension here, because the code and the entry set it.

A railing on a ramp has to be there, it has to be grip-able, and it has to run the full length of the ramp with a return at the ends. An exterior stair gets the same treatment, with a rail on the open side and a hand rail on the wall where there is one. The building department is where the answer to what is required lives.

Aluminum, Steel or Vinyl

Indianapolis averages 43.63 inches of rain and 25.5 inches of snow a year. A railing outdoors sits in that weather year-round, so the material decides how long it stays looking good.

Aluminum will not rust, which is why it is the common choice for a porch or deck rail. It is lighter than steel and holds its finish without painting. Steel is the strongest and the choice where the rail has to take a real load; it needs a finish that keeps the rust off. Vinyl is the lightest and the lowest upkeep, washing clean without paint, but it is not as rigid as metal.

Matching the Fence

A railing in the same style and finish as an aluminum or ornamental fence keeps the property looking consistent. A porch rail in black aluminum beside a black aluminum fence reads as one project, not two. See the aluminum fences page for the fence styles that pair with a rail.

Outdoor Railing Questions

What railings do you build outdoors?

Porch and step railings, deck guard railings, and railings on ramps and exterior stairs at homes and businesses. These are exterior railings only, built to take Indiana weather.

What material holds up best outdoors?

Aluminum will not rust, steel is the strongest, and vinyl is the lightest and lowest upkeep. Indianapolis averages 43.63 inches of rain and 25.5 inches of snow a year, so the material has to take wet and cold.

Do these railings go inside a building?

No. We build exterior railings only: porches, decks, steps, and ramps. Railings inside a building are a different trade, and we do not build them.

Can a railing match an aluminum fence?

Yes. A railing in the same style and finish as an aluminum or ornamental fence keeps the property looking consistent. See the aluminum fences and commercial ornamental fence pages.

Do homes and businesses get the same railings?

Yes. The same company builds railings for homes and for businesses. A ramp or exterior stair at a business is held to the accessibility and building codes, which the building department enforces.
