Pool barrier fences built to meet Indiana safety code with self-closing, latching gates within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256.
A pool fence is a barrier fence built to meet the state pool code and, in some towns, a taller local rule. It is not a privacy fence by default, though it can be one. Within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256, we install pool fences for homes and the same fences are available for businesses. Free estimates mean we check the pool yard, the town rules, and the gate requirements before we quote.
The Indiana Residential Code requires residential pool access to be restricted by walls or fencing not less than four feet high completely surrounding the pool and deck, with self-closing and latching gates capable of being locked, or by an approved power safety pool cover. The code section is 675 IAC 14-4.4-38, Section R326.27.3.
Some towns set a taller minimum than the state's four feet, so the town's building department has the final word on what applies to your lot. We do not state any town's pool number here, because the town's own rule has to be checked. See the fence permit guide for the general fence rules by town, and call your building department for the pool barrier rule that applies.
A pool fence is only as good as its gate. The code requires the gate to self-close and self-latch, and the latch has to be lockable. That means the gate swings shut on its own from any open position and latches without anyone pushing it. If it does not close on its own, the barrier is open and the pool is not restricted.
Inspectors look at the gate first because that is where a barrier fails. A fence can be the right height and the right material and still not meet code if the gate swings open and stays there. The hardware matters as much as the panel.
Aluminum keeps the view open on a pool lot. An open picket fence lets you see the water from the house, which is part of the point of a pool yard, and the powder coat will not rust in the splash zone. See aluminum fences.
Vinyl adds privacy. A solid vinyl panel blocks the view from outside the yard and gives a barrier in one panel, which some pool owners want for the same reason others want an open aluminum fence. See vinyl fences.
The material choice does not change the code. Either way, the fence has to be at least four feet high, the gate has to self-close and self-latch, and the town's building department has the final word on what applies.
The Indiana Residential Code accepts an approved power safety pool cover instead of a fence. A powered cover that meets the standard can satisfy the barrier requirement on its own. Many pool owners still want a fence even when a cover is in place, because a fence barriers the pool whenever the cover is open, and a cover only barriers it when it is closed. For most pools, a fence is the simpler path to code.
The barrier rules can apply differently to an above-ground pool, depending on the pool height, the ladder, and the deck. Rather than guess, ask the building department what applies to your pool before you build. To talk through a project, call (317) 775-2452 or use the contact page.

The gate must self-close and self-latch, and the latch must be lockable. Inspectors look at the gate first because a fence that does not close on its own does not barrier the pool.
