An automated gate opens from a keypad, a remote, or a vehicle without anyone getting out. Within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256, we install gate operators and access control for driveway and commercial gates that are already in or are going in at the same time. Gate automation is available for homes and businesses. Free estimates mean we look at the gate, the opening, and the power before anyone specs an operator.
Swing operators mount to the gate post and push the leaf open like a door. They suit a driveway gate that has room to swing inward without hitting a parked car or a slope. On a flat drive with clearance, a swing operator is the simpler choice.
Slide operators pull the gate along the fence line on a track or a cantilever. They suit a short driveway with no swing room, a sloped drive where a swing gate would drag, or a wide commercial opening where a swing leaf would be too heavy to move easily.
Keypad. A code at the gate. The simplest access control, and the one visitors can use without a device.
Remote. A handheld transmitter that opens the gate from the vehicle, like a garage remote.
Card or fob reader. A credential reader at the gate for residents, employees, or members. Access can be revoked without re-coding the keypad.
Vehicle sensor. A loop buried in the drive that opens the gate when a car pulls up. Hands-free, but it opens for any vehicle that triggers it.
Phone-based entry. A call box that rings a phone and opens the gate remotely. Useful for deliveries and guests the keypad code is not shared with.
Automated vehicle gates are covered by two safety standards: UL 325 for the operator and ASTM F2200 for the gate itself. Both exist to prevent entrapment, the risk of a gate closing on a person, a pet, or a vehicle and not stopping. That is why a properly installed automated gate has photo eyes across the opening or sensing edges on the gate, either of which stops and reverses the gate when the path is blocked.
A gate without those devices can close on anything in the opening. The standards and the devices are there because entrapment injuries are serious and avoidable. We install operators to the standard and include the safety devices the standard calls for.
A gate operator needs power at the gate, which means a circuit run to the post or a solar panel and battery where trenching is not practical. The power draw is modest, but it has to be there before the operator goes in.
Cold, ice, and snow are what stop gates in Indiana. Indianapolis averages 25.5 inches of snow a year. Ice on a slide track jams the gate, and snow piled in the path keeps a swing leaf from clearing. An operator rated for the climate, a drain under the track, and a path that sheds snow all help a gate keep moving through the winter. No gate is immune to a hard freeze, but the right setup keeps the trouble small.
Fire departments commonly require a way in through an automated gate, and the local fire department sets that requirement. A Knox box, a strobe-activated opener, or a dedicated override entry is the usual answer. The department decides what it will accept, so ask before the gate goes in.

A keypad, a remote, a card or fob reader, a vehicle sensor buried in the drive, or a phone-based entry system. More than one can be used together so residents and visitors get in different ways.
UL 325 covers the operator and ASTM F2200 covers the gate, both to prevent entrapment. A properly installed automated gate has photo eyes or sensing edges that stop and reverse the gate if something is in the path.
