A fence is only as useful as the gate that runs through it. Within 50 miles of Indianapolis 46256, we build walk gates, driveway gates, and commercial gates that match the fence and hold up to daily use. Custom gates are available for homes and businesses. Free estimates mean we look at the opening, the grade, and the fence before anyone commits to a gate type.
The gate is the part of a fence that gets used every day and the part that sags first. What keeps a gate square is the frame, the hinges, the latch, and a post that does not move. A gate built light, or hung on a post that was not set deep enough, drops at the latch side inside a season or two and starts dragging on the ground.
A walk gate is the narrow gate for foot traffic, usually three or four feet wide. It gets opened and closed more than any other gate on the property, so the hardware matters as much as the frame. A heavy-duty hinge and a latch that clicks shut beat a light spring latch every time on a gate that gets used daily.
Single swing. One leaf that swings open inward. It is the simplest driveway gate, but it needs room on the property side for the leaf to clear. On a short driveway that room is not always there.
Double swing. Two leaves that meet in the middle, splitting a wide opening into two shorter leaves. It handles a wide driveway where a single leaf would be too heavy and too long to swing easily.
Slide gate. A gate that runs along the fence line on a track or a cantilever instead of swinging. It is the answer for a short driveway with no swing room, a sloped drive where a swing gate would hit the grade, or a wide opening where a swing leaf would be unwieldy.
Commercial gates carry vehicle traffic into yards, lots, and facilities. Slide and cantilever gates handle wide openings where trucks enter and leave; swing gates handle narrower drives and walk entries. The gate has to clear the turning radius of the vehicles that use it, and the post or the cantilever support has to carry the weight of a leaf that may be twenty feet long.
For the commercial gate types and the fence systems they pair with, see the commercial fencing page.
A pool gate has to close and latch on its own every time. The Indiana Residential Code requires residential pool access to be restricted by walls or fencing not less than four feet high completely surrounding the pool and deck, with self-closing and latching gates capable of being locked, or by an approved power safety pool cover. Some towns set a taller minimum than four feet, so the town building department has the final word.
For the full pool barrier details, see the pool fences page.
A gate does not have to be automated the day it goes in. A driveway or commercial gate can be built now as a manual gate and automated later, as long as the post and the frame are sized to carry the operator. Planning for it up front costs less than rebuilding the gate later. See the gate automation page for the operator and access-control options.

Walk gates, single and double swing driveway gates, and slide gates. Commercial slide, cantilever and swing gates handle yards and lots. Each is built to match the fence it sits in.
A single swing needs room to open inward, so a short or sloped driveway may be better with a slide gate that runs along the fence line. A double swing splits a wide opening into two shorter leaves.
A square frame, hinges sized to the gate, a latch that holds the leaf shut, and a post set deep enough not to move. The post is the part that fails first when a gate sags.
Yes. A gate can be built now and an operator added later, as long as the post and frame are sized to carry the operator. See the gate automation page for the operators and controls.
