Permits and rules

Do I need a fence permit in Indianapolis?

No building permit is needed for a fence that meets the zoning rules. Front yards are capped at 3.5 feet, or 4 feet if the fence is 30% opacity or less, and side and rear yards at 6 feet. In a locally designated historic district, the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission must approve the fence first.

Do other central Indiana towns require a fence permit?

They differ. Carmel and Noblesville require a fence permit; Westfield and Plainfield do not. See the fence permit guide for the full town-by-town list.

What about Indiana 811?

Indiana 811 needs at least two full working days' notice before digging, so buried utility lines can be marked. That is state law.

Do I need to call 811 for a fence?

Yes. Indiana law requires notice to Indiana 811 at least two full working days before you dig, so buried utilities can be marked.

Property lines and neighbors

Do you mark my property line?

No. We do not survey. A licensed professional surveyor marks property lines in Indiana. We build on your side of the line, where you tell us it is.

What if my neighbor and I disagree about the line?

Call a licensed professional surveyor. We do not locate or mark property lines, and we will not guess at where the line is.

Do I need HOA approval for my fence?

If you are in an HOA, its rules apply on top of the town's. HOA approval is the homeowner's to get.

Can you build on the property line?

We build on your side of the line. Where exactly the line is, is your call — and a surveyor's, not ours.
